The Best Cheese Storage Method, In or Out of the Fridge

best cheese storage solution

Store your cheese in the Cheese Grotto to keep it fresh, flavorful, and delicious.

Cheese is a living food, and it stays freshest and tastes best when it’s stored with natural materials. We’ve taken inspiration from the cheese caves used by skilled artisans for thousands of years to create the Cheese Grotto. It’s the ideal way to store your favorite styles of cheese without wasteful plastic wrap, plastic containers, or costly cheese paper.

With its breathable wood construction and humidifying clay brick, the Cheese Grotto recreates the ideal conditions for storing and aging cheese. This helps it last longer and prevents premature molding or drying out without being wrapped.

Reusable for a lifetime and easy to clean, this one-of-a-kind container reduces waste and saves you money over time. No plastic, costly cheese paper, bags, or parchment paper required. The Grotto preserves flavor, texture, and aroma of every wheel and wedge without the need to wrap.

With the Cheese Grotto, you have the flexibility to store cheese in the refrigerator for longer shelf life—up to 3 to 6 weeks for most styles. About an hour before you’re ready to enjoy your cheeses, simply take the Grotto or Grotto shelf out of the fridge to allow the cheese to come to room temperature. This ensures your cheeses will taste lively and flavorful and offer the supple textures we love.

Want your cheese ready to eat at a moment’s notice? The Grotto is great for that, too. Room temperature is the ideal cheese storage temperature—the way the French do, and the way humans have done for thousands of years—and it’s an excellent way to keep cheese tasting great.

With the Cheese Grotto, your wedges will stay fresh this way for 7 to 10 days. Store cheese in your Grotto on the counter at room temperature, and it’ll always taste its best when your craving hits.

Looking for a fun, easy DIY food hobby? With our free home cheesemaking lesson, you can make your own delicious goat cheese to age to perfection in the Grotto—it’s like having your very own cheese cave in your kitchen. For home cheese aging projects, keep your Cheese Grotto in a basement, cellar, or other cool space for best results.

Whether you’re a budding cheese lover or a seasoned connoisseur, a cheese board aficionado or a home cheesemaking enthusiast, there’s a Grotto that suits your style. Because there’s no paper, plastic wrap, or plastic containers needed, it’s more sustainable and cost-effective, too.
