Tennessee’s Sequatchie Cove Creamery took inspiration from nearby Shakerag Hollow, a ravine full of wildflowers and a moonshining past. Like the moonshiners of Prohibition-era Chattanooga, Shakerag Blue is cloaked in darkness: It’s covered with fig leaves soaked in local whiskey. Made using raw milk from the farm’s herd of Jersey and Jersey-Holstein cross cows, it’s a Southern take on leaf-wrapped blue cheese that exemplifies the creamery’s focus on Tennessee terroir.

Long Description

Shakerag Blue is at once bright and salty, sweet and fruity—with a pleasant hint of funk and a mouth-puckering bite at the finish. Expect notes of buttermilk, fermented cream, pine, and grass and a lingering aroma from the whiskey-soaked fig leaves. It’s dense but crumbles perfectly into munchable morsels on a cheese board or when topping salads or steaks.

About the Producer

For more than a decade, Nathan and Padgett Arnold have been making raw-milk, farmstead cheeses at Sequatchie Cove Creamery in Sequatchie, Tennessee. The creamery is 100% solar-powered and has a spotlight on sustainability—the Arnolds feed their whey to woodlot pigs to avoid waste.
Sequatchie Cove Creamery’s products are inspired by cheeses from the Savoie region of France, with the unique characteristics of the local Southern terroir.

Serving Suggestions

Stay true to Shakerag Blue’s roots by washing it down with Tennessee whiskey, though barley wine or root beer make a fine match too. Pair with dried fruit or smear onto raisin toast to set off the cheese’s deep savoriness.

My Favorite Part Of Winter!

I look forward to this cheese every year. It is a show-stopper on any cheeseboard and its pairings-- don't even get me started! This cheese is my excuse to keep potato chips in the house. It is so good, I have to ship my parents a wheel as well each season! Cannot wait to dig into a wheel this year.

Shipping Details

Hardware

If you have purchased cheese hardware from our Grotto collection, it usually takes us 1 to 3 business days to ship your order, unless otherwise listed on the respective product page.

Cheese Orders

As the cheeses are a fresh product, we want to ensure the quickest transit time as possible, so your order arrives in the best possible condition.  Express shipping costs range from $25 - $55 depending on the package size, delivery window, location and carrier. We ship Mondays only each week, and orders must be placed by Thursday the week prior to be included in Monday's shipments.  If you purchased a cheese subscription with a set shipping schedule (Meet the Makers or any Gift Subscription), please refer to the respective product page for the fixed shipping schedule.

Please note: cheese ships from our cheese warehouse and hardware ships from our hardware warehouse. If you are purchasing both hardware and cheese, there will be a shipping charge for the cheese portion of your order.

International Orders

We are sorry, but we aren't legally allowed to ship cheese across the US border!  We can, however, ship our hardware from our Grotto collection worldwide.  Please note that the shipping costs options you see at checkout do not include customs, duties, and taxes which will be billed to you upon reaching the border, and will be an additional expense.  Those costs vary from country to country, but we recommend calculating at an additional 20% charge. If you refuse the package due to these additional fees and the hardware is returned to us, we will be able to issue a refund minus the outbound and return shipping costs.
